After moving in initially we received no water bills because residents are allowed 9000 gallons free monthly. But within the first few months of residence we received a water bill alleging we used more than 68,000 gallons of water! Of course we refused to pay it. The next billing cycle we received a similar bill for about $330, for another 68,000 gallons of water. (The gallons and dollar amounts, while being recalled from our recollections, are accurate enough to be valid illustrations.). Again, we refused to pay it.
By now I had begun using the spreadsheet I built that automatically calculated our usage (As a defense, I read our meter monthly at about the same time management reads it). Then one month I was delighted when they read it just 24 hours after I did. When the bill arrived it alleged that in the 24 hour period between the time I read the meter and they read the meter we used 6370 gallons. 6370 gallons of water in 24 hours? No way! We returned the bill unpaid and soon received a phone call from a an executive asking why we refused to pay the bill. I explained that the bill was outrageous on its face and there''s no way we could have used that much water. The exec then asked "Will you split it with me?" I thought he was joking, but he wasn't. Bargaining over a bogus water bill?! I refused to pay it so the bill was cancelled. Within a few days they came and installed a second new water meter, but water bills that were simply unimaginable continued to arrive, and continued to be returned unpaid, including the latest one for $2.95.
And to my total amazement, as I sat writing this, the exec in question actually knocked on my door to discuss my unpaid $2.70 water bill - this executive actually drove 100 miles to collect a $2.70 bill! He said he'd already absorbed more than $400 of our unpaid water bills and installed two new water meters and calibrated the latest one in my presence and wanted me to pay the $2.70. I grinned and held back my laughter at the realization that a Walden Woods executive would pay a personal house call to collect such a petty amount. But I think my wide grin told him of my level of contempt.
He said "You have to pay your water bills just like everyone else in Walden Woods South". My smile widened as I recalled the people who recently complained about their water bills, like a friend who lives in a small house all alone and got hit for a few hundred bucks, like the two widows, both of whom live alone in small houses. One got a bill for about $330 and the other returned from a couple of months out of town only to find a bill for that period for more than $300 - for the period her house was empty!.
Just a couple of days ago I was chatting with a friend who happens to be the president of our Home Owners Association who told me that when we was discussing the water bill problems with CRF they told him (hang on to your hats!) that the water bills we've been receiving aren't "water bills" at all. They're a "penalty" for using too much water! Oh boy, living in Walden Woods is so much fun!
